One frustrating thing about trying to trim down is that, sometimes, even after exercising or dieting for a period of time, you might not notice any significant changes. Consequently, you might become discouraged and stop trying.
However, there are reasons that can hinder your goal of dropping two or more dress size and you might be facing one of them. These may include any of the following:
Your Body Is Retaining Water
Sometimes your body could retain more water than usual, causing you to be bigger. For instance, women may experience water retention when their period is due or if after eating a salty meal. Also, working out excessively can make you retain water especially if you are not drinking lots of water. The best way to avoid water retention is by drinking more water and avoid consuming salty foods or alcoholic beverages.
If you’ve ever had an intense workout, you notice that your body tends to crave more food. This is actually normal and expected, as your body tries to recoup the energy expended during exercising. This is where a lot of us slip back into bad habits like filling up on carbs, junk and late night snacks. You should be careful not to consume extra calories which could prevent you from losing weight.
Note that, you don’t need to limit your food intake. Instead, choose healthier meals especially protein-rich foods that help build your muscles. In order to lose weight, you must consume fewer calories than you burn each day
Keep a food diary to note and monitor your food intake. But, let’s be honest, that in itself is hard work, that’s why we’ve created a forum that tracks what you eat, when you eat and keep record throughout your weight loss journey. Read more here.
Using the wrong measure to determine success
The scale doesn’t always reflect the accurate amount of fat burned. It’s important to note that you could be gaining muscle which explains why the scale might remain unchanged.
For a more effective measurement, measure your waist, hips, thigh circumference and upper arm circumference each week or month and compare to previous measurements. If you have burned enough calories to lose fat successfully, then your measurements will slowly shrink.
Having the same workout routine
Another reason your weight is at a standstill is that you’re repeating the same workout routine over and over again and your body has plateaued. It necessary to mix up your workout routines; cardio, strength building, core workout routines. Each of these produces different results. For instance, Cardio burns more calories at the time you are doing it, but weight training encourages your body to burn more calories through the rest of the day. Also, inconsistent exercise is generally not very effective.
Not Drinking Enough Water
Water is important when it comes to losing weight. It helps to suppress appetite, hydrates your entire body system –allowing your kidneys and liver to function properly. In addition, it’s vital to add fibre gradually and increase water intake at the same time; this aids digestion and avoids constipation. You should be drinking about 10-12 glasses of water daily.
If you work a 9-5 job, you’re probably spending a huge chunk of that time sitting in front of a computer. A research done by the University of Missouri-Columbia suggests that sitting for just a few hours causes your body to stop making a fat-inhibiting enzyme called lipase. Meanwhile, another study done by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee shows that getting up and walking for just two minutes during each of those hours’ can burn an additional 59 calories a day.
At different intervals, it’s advisable to take a walk around your office premise to keep your body in shape.
High-stress levels trigger the production of the stress hormone cortisol, which steps up the production of a certain brain chemical, neuropeptide Y, which increases cravings for carbohydrates and sugar.
Equally, too much cortisol slows metabolism and even worse, causes fat to be stored in the abdominal area- the worst and hardest weight to lose. Fortunately, eating a balanced, nutritious meal can repair the damage that stress does to the body. One of the best ways to overcome high-stress levels is having a good social support network.
